Massachusetts General Hospital has some of the most distinguished doctors in the world and is also fortunate enough to have some of the most generous donors. Finding new ways to greatly improve treatment of our patients is an essential part of our mission.
As part of the $1.5 billion dollar Campaign for the Third Century, enhancing medical education has been identified as one of five areas in need of critical funding. With the goal of raising $50 million for this initiative, a portion of these funds will be allocated to ongoing educational programs.
The MGH Psychiatry Academy was founded in 2005 with the primary mission of disseminating evidenced based diagnostic, treatment, and preventive best practices, as well as the latest research findings to clinicians all over the world. The overarching goal of the MGH Psychiatry Academy is to improve the standard of care for patients, especially in a time of healthcare redesign. Donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations to the MGH Psychiatry Academy have supported a variety of remarkable education programs. Among them:
Healthcare Provider Education
Professionals, who value the highest standards of clinical care, can participate in the MGH Psychiatry Academy's provider education programs that use an innovative program design of live and mobile electronic platforms that allow participants to translate newly acquired skills into practice. The MGH Psychiatry Academy operates the largest departmental based education program at MGH, reaching 35,000 healthcare professionals and includes a membership that spans 121 countries around the globe. The MGH Psychiatry Academy disseminates more than 100,000 learning activities per year enhancing provider competencies and overcoming the barriers they face in their day-to-day clinical challenges. These programs are made possible by generous donations from foundations and commercial entities.
With continued support from the Sidney R. Baer, Jr. Foundation, the MGH Department of Psychiatry has advanced its mission to improve the quality of psychiatric care through innovative and public education. 18 programs, presented free-of-charge, have benefitted approximately 3,500 patients and their loved ones. Priority has been given to topics focusing on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar and depressive disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, as well as complementary and alternative medicine.
Home Base Program
Matching gifts from the Red Sox Foundation and MGH created the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program. Its mission is to provide care to veterans with deployment and combat-related stress disorders and traumatic brain injury. With this generous philanthropic support, the MGH Psychiatry Academy was able to develop conferences for providers on PTSD and TBI and a conference tailored to the specific educational needs of clergy who are often first responders to veterans and their families with these conditions. In 2012, 5,300 clinicians from every state in the country participated in Home Base's free, on-line accredited education series From the War Zone to the Home Front: Supporting the Mental Health of Veterans and Families. A collaboration with the VA's National Center for PTSD. This series attracted mostly community health professionals and 88% said it was relevant to their practice.
The Lunder-Dineen Health Education Alliance of Maine
A gift from the Lunder Family of Maine to the Massachusetts General Hospital was designated to create and disseminate educational offerings that might be of value to residents and health-care practitioners living in Maine.
Through generous philanthropic support, the MGH Psychiatry Academy is able to deliver vital programs that further the educational mission of the hospital. Your tax-deductible gift to the MGH Psychiatry Academy will help fund these existing programs as well as new programs that give healthcare providers and patients new knowledge of promising treatments..
