Description

This webinar is a rebroadcast of Dr. Winkelman's insomnia lecture initially presented in Boston in April 2011 as part of the Difficult to Treat Depression Program.

In patients with major depressive disorder, approximately two-thirds present with comorbid insomnia; in fact, epidemiological and clinical studies show depression to be the most frequent cause of chronic insomnia. However, evaluation of insomnia in depressed patients is complex; insomnia can be a core symptom of major depression as well as a side effect of antidepressants. Clinicians must also rule out other primary sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and periodic limb movement disorder. In this lecture, providers will learn about the relationship between insomnia and depression, three of the most common sleep disorders, and how to implement effective insomnia treatments.
