The MGH Psychiatry Academy and the MGH Institute of Health Professions co-present this important one-day workshop that explores and examines the effects of marijuana on cognition, behavior, pain, and function. The event is designed for all professions – psychiatry, primary care, nursing, social work, case management, psychology, physical therapy, and more – and features a series of 20-45 minute presentations by experts on the prevalence, risks, and health impacts of marijuana. The event also includes ample opportunities for interact with and ask questions to the faculty.

The morning session focuses on a basic understanding of the neurobiology of marijuana, medical indications and uses, and potential adverse effects. Local experts provide insight into marijuana use in the greater Boston community.

During the afternoon session, the focus turns to medical use of marijuana and specifically addresses efficacy, complications and the multidisciplinary care of patients using medical marijuana. Local experts discuss Massachusetts regulations around medical marijuana. In the final panel presentation of the day, patients share contrasting experiences with marijuana and respond to questions from the audience.

Target Audience

This program is intended for: Psychiatrists, primary care physicians, nurses, licensed mental health counselors, social workers, physical therapists and psychologists.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize and predict the signs and symptoms of misuse of marijuana.
  • Explain and discuss the use of medical marijuana.
  • Discuss multidisciplinary aspects of care for patients using medical marijuana.
