From the War Zone to the Home Front II; Supporting the Mental Health of Veterans and Families 


New 9-part series of on-demand, online trainings for community primary care and mental health providers

From the War Zone to the Home Front II is a free 9-part, live, interactive, on-line training series presented by the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for PTSD. It is meant for community primary care and mental health providers including physicians, psychologists, nurses, and clinical social workers.

From the War Zone to the Home Front II is a continuation of last year’s successful series which attracted more than 5,500 clinicians nationwide.  From the War Zone to the Home Front II contains all new content, including a more comprehensive look at veteran suicide, diagnosing and treating co-morbid PTSD and TBI, substance abuse, sleep problems, the culture of returned veterans, the new DSM-5 on PTSD, complicated grief in veterans and military families, and other challenges facing returning veterans and families today. War Zone faculty includes acknowledged experts from throughout the U.S.

The series begins Thursday March 14, 2013 at 11:30AM EST. Sessions are one-hour in length and may be viewed live or "on-demand". Continuing education credits CMEs/CEUs provided at no cost.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the key risk factors for suicide in returning veterans.
  • Review the evidenced based diagnostic and treatment strategies for co-morbid PTSD and TBI.
  • Describe the unique issues for pain management in the veteran population.
  • Identify the subtle signs of past and current aggression and domestic violence among veterans and their family members.
  • Review the demographic and diagnostic features of veterans with psychoactive substance use disorders.

Target Audience

This program is intended for: primary care and community mental health providers, pediatricians, community health centers, community mental health centers, college and university health professionals, psychiatric nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, social workers, employee assistance programs, clergy and other first responders.

Psychologists: The Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry maintains responsibility for this program and its content. This offering meets the criteria for 9 Continuing Education (CE) credit per presentation for psychologists. 

Nurses: This program meets the requirements of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (244 CMR 5.00) for 9 contact hours of nursing continuing education credit. 

Social Workers: This program has been approved for 9 Social Work Continuing Education hours for relicensure, in accordance with 258 CMR. Collaborative of NASW and the Boston College and Simmons Schools of Social Work Authorization Number D 60542 .

Licensed Mental Health Counselors: This program has been approved for 9 Licensed Mental Health Counselor Continuing Education contact hours in Category 1. Licensed Mental Health Counselor course authorization Number 13-0159.

Other Professions: This course allows other providers to claim a Participation Certificate upon successful completion of this course.
