Description

This interactive course offers an overview of evidence-based behavioral health interventions. These skills are critical across all mental health and medical settings. This includes primary care, where behavioral health integration is a growing priority to improve health outcomes.

The course is led by health psychology expert Dr. Ana-Maria Vranceanu. It includes lectures, clinical resources, and role-play videos to demonstrate skills. Videos focus on skill delivery for both mental health professionals and medical specialists.

The content of this course helps you:

  • Review and contrast the biomedical and biopsychosocial models of disease
  • Implement the biopsychosocial model in your own practice
  • Help patients preserve health and prevent illness through lifestyle changes
  • Use strategies in your clinical work that aid recovery and prevent chronic illness after injury

Learning Objectives

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

Week 1

Introduction to Behavioral Medicine - Ana-Maria Vranceanu, PhD & Emily Zale, PhD

Session Goals:

  • Describe the biopsychosocial framework.
  • Recognize human tendencies to dichotomize the mind and the body.
  • Summarize differences between the biopsychosocial and biomedical models, and understand common barriers to implementing the biopsychosocial model.
  • Describe the Cognitive Behavioral Model of health and illness.
  • Explain how to implement the CBT model with a range of patients.

Week 2

Preserving Health and Preventing Illness Through Lifestyle Changes - Ana-Maria Vranceanu, PhD & Emily Zale, PhD

Session Goals:

  • Describe common non-communicable diseases that can be addressed through lifestyle behavioral changes.
  • Describe "teachable moments" for lifestyle behavioral changes.
  • Describe skills for increasing patient motivation and understand how to implement motivational interviewing skills with a range of patients.
  • Describe SMART goal setting and understand how to implement SMART goal setting with a range of patients.

Week 3

Promoting Recovery and Preventing Chronic Illness after Injury - Ana-Maria Vranceanu, PhD & Emily Zale, PhD

Session Goals:

  • Describe the biopsychosocial model and health anxiety framework that address the transition from acute to chronic illness.
  • Describe cognitive skills to promote optimal physical and mental health recovery, including adaptive thinking and dialectics, and understand how to implement cognitive skills with a range of patients.
  • Describe behavioral skills to promote gradual return to activity and physical recovery, and understand how to implement activity pacing with a range of patients.
  • Discuss evidence-based time-limited programs for optimizing recovery.

Week 4

Optimizing Management of Chronic Illness - Ana-Maria Vranceanu, PhD & Emily Zale, PhD

Session Goals:

  • Describe the biopsychosocial model of chronic illness and challenges related to chronic illness management.
  • Define the goals of chronic illness management as to increase quality of life and decrease symptom burden (vs. curative).
  • Describe skills to promote adherence to medical treatment and self-care, including problem solving, and understand how to implement skills to promote adherence with a range of patients.
  • Describe skills to promote quality of life among patients with chronic illness, including activity scheduling, and understand how to implement activity scheduling with a range of patients.
