Barbara Cashavelly is a Nurse Director at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She received her BSN from Simmons College and MSN from Boston University in Boston. Barbara has practiced her entire career as an oncology nurse for over 30 years. Her primary focus has been in medical oncology, leukemia, bone marrow transplant and palliative care. Barbara worked for many years as a staff nurse caring for oncology patients. For the past 14 years, Barbara has worked as a Nurse Director. She was a Nurse Director for 10 years in the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center Multidisciplinary practices. Barbara collaborated with the cancer center team in the growth and development of the disease center practices. She was also influential in the development of oncology nursing practice and roles in all of the Multidisciplinary Disease Center practices; which included the nurse practitioner, practice nurse and access nurse. Barbara is now the nurse director of a 32 bed Innovation inpatient medical oncology unit. She supports relationship based care and continuous innovative improvements in the unit and practice environment. Working collaboratively with physician leadership, Barbara is also responsible for the oncology inpatient Nurse practitioner service. Barbara has received numerous Partners in Excellence awards for individual outcomes as well as for team led initiatives; she is also the recipient of the Marie Petrilli Oncology Nursing Award. She has been President of the Boston Oncology Nursing Society and has spoken locally, nationally and internationally on various clinical and leadership topics.
