Utilizing the faculty and resources of the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry, we work with clinicians, departments, governments, and other entities to improve the mental health of patients worldwide through innovative teaching methods, technology, educational research, and institution level consultation.

Since its founding in 2005, the Psychiatry Academy has educated thousands of clinicians through comprehensive, sequential, iterative, interactive, and innovative educational programs.

The Psychiatry Academy staff includes experts in educational design and dissemination, data collection, analysis, and outcomes reporting. This creates a culture and commitment that is driven and constantly informed by research. Since 2008, our team has presented 30+ posters and authored 20+ academic publications.

Our Knowledge Translation and Outcomes team brings the academic rigor of a world-class hospital and medical school to the assessment of educational activities. The team consistsof experts in educational design, biostatistics, and psychometric measurement, and full- time research staff focus on development and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. In addition to measuring the education impact of our programs, this group studies the underlying pedagogic mechanisms of learning and the development of novel learning formats, such as web-based simulation, mobile apps, and interactive learning modules.

In addition to extensive research on education for health care professionals, we also have notable experience in research on public education health projects. We have research projects currently under review on the topics of caregiver burden and shared decision-making, and are part of a major research grant to develop an innovative mobile app that measures the rate of accessing care and/or resources among veterans and family members impacted by psychological wounds of war.

Interactive, Multi-Part Online Courses

These multi-week courses allow participants from across the globe to share ideas through interactive discussion boards, obtain live feedback from faculty during weekly call-in hours, and access an array of course materials, self- assessments, real-life case examples, and role-play videos that illustrate key techniques.

Computer Simulation Assessment Tools (CSAT)

A CSAT immerses participants in an interactive, virtual clinical encounter that provides vignettes of a clinical interview. Clinicians then choose from a menu of treatment and discussion options that mirror choices typically faced in an actual clinical encounter.

Interactive Learning Modules (ILMs)

ILMs are online tutorials that includes slides and embedded audio/video clips. After specific learning points, participants are presented with questions to assess understanding of the activity content.

Virtual Grand Rounds Series

These series of live, one-hour webinars feature live Q&A for with faculty for participants from all over the world. Every session in each series is also available in mobile-optimized, on-demand format.

Education Service Agreements

A series of custom, private, and unaccredited courses for international learners, employees of commercial and private companies, and other constituents looking to access Massachusetts General Hospital faculty in a private academic setting

Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Modules

A series of self-assessment modules on mental health topics reviewed and approved by specialty boards such as the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) as part of a comprehensive self-assessment program, which is mandated by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) as a necessary component of Maintenance of Certification.

Patient Education

Our team executes a variety of research and education projects for patients and the general public, including live events and online programs on mental health topics and important trends in health care such as shared decision-making. In 2014, we will develop an innovative mobile app that measures the rate of accessing care and/or resources

Exam Review Courses

To help practicing physicians and residents study for critical board exams, these in-depth, online courses offer high-definition audio and video lectures on dozens of topics with a specific discipline. The content is specially optimized for tech-savvy physicians who prefer a mobile learning format so they can study on the go.

Clinical Skills Verification

This program immerses participants in a personal learning experience and consultation within the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry, and allows participants to receive formative feedback, strengthen interviewing skills, and demonstrate clinical competency for American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. (ABPN) certification.

The Massachusetts General Hospital Psychiatry Update & Board Preparation, 3rd Edition, is an 800-page textbook published by the Academy. Written by more than 100 expert faculty, the book includes 50+ chapters of content and 250+ questions and answers. It is available for sale through the Amazon print store. We currently have other publishing projects in development.

eBooks

An interactive version of the Massachusetts General Hospital Psychiatry Update & Board Preparation, 3rd Edition, that is accessible via Kindle, Nook and iPad on any smartphone or tablet. Additional e-book projects are currently in development.

iPhone App

Our native iPhone app offers access to dozens of Academy educational activities across therapeutic areas and engages tech-savvy learners who prefer to participate in education on mobile devices. In 2013, we served more than 100,000 pieces of digital content through this format, allowing learners to participate in education from their smartphones wherever and whenever they want.

Performance Improvement/Quality Improvement

Multi-platform, comprehensive educational programs involving self-assessments of practice patterns, analysis of EMR practice data, and tailored educational interventions designed to improve quality of care and clinical performance. Interventions can include asynchronous online discussion boards, Interactive Learning Modules, didactic or case-based examples, clinical monographs, patient education handouts, and more.
